Local SEO for Small Business: A Checklist and Honest Costs
Skyfall Intelligence AgencyShare
Updated October 2026
Local SEO for small business comes down to six jobs: a verified and complete Google Business Profile, a verified Search Console property, an honest review habit, matching business details across directories, one useful page for each service you sell, and a website Google can index and load on a phone. Most of it uses free tools. A one-location business can finish the first pass in roughly 15 to 22 hours (our estimate, itemized below).
Below: the checklist with rough time per task, what a do-it-yourself route, a listings service and a full SEO engagement each cover, and a rule for choosing between them.
How Google decides who shows up locally
Google's help page on local ranking says results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help, accessed October 2026). Prominence draws on things like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have. The same page says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." Anyone who guarantees a map position is promising something Google says nobody can sell. Distance is fixed. You can change how complete your profile is, how many genuine reviews you have and how well your site matches what people search, and the checklist targets those.
The local SEO checklist
1. Google Business Profile (1 to 2 hours, plus a verification wait)
- Claim and verify it. Google chooses the options for your profile (phone, text, email, live video or a postcard). Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days; do not edit your name, address or category while you wait. Google's review after you submit a code can take up to 5 business days (Google, Verify your business, accessed October 2026).
- Use your real name. Google requires the name your signage, website and stationery already use. Taglines, phone numbers, service keywords and location text in the name field are not permitted and can lead to suspension (Google, Guidelines for representing your business, accessed October 2026). That page also lists repeating the same name in two languages as not acceptable, which matters in a bilingual market. Enter the name once.
- Get the address right. A storefront shows its address. A service-area business with no storefront should hide its address and set a service area, which generally should not extend more than about two hours of driving from your base. P.O. boxes and virtual offices are not eligible.
- Pick categories carefully. Choose the most specific primary category, then add only what describes your core business. Google allows up to nine more and says not to use categories as keywords (Google, Edit your Business Profile, accessed October 2026).
- Fill in the rest. Add hours (including holiday hours), a local phone number you control, services, attributes and photos of your real work. The description cannot contain links or sales prices.
- One profile per location. Google says duplicates cause problems with how your information displays.
2. Google Search Console (30 to 60 minutes)
Add your site as a property and verify ownership by HTML file, HTML tag, Google Analytics code or Google Tag Manager (Google, Verify your site ownership, accessed October 2026). Use whichever method your platform allows. Verifying here can also verify your Business Profile instantly in some cases.
Data takes a few days to start accruing. Once it does, the Performance report shows clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, grouped by query or page (Google, Performance report, accessed October 2026). Read it monthly for queries that show your pages and pages with impressions but few clicks. Those are your next edits.
3. Reviews (30 minutes to set up)
Ask real customers right after the work is done, with a direct link to your Google review form. Google's policy bans offering payment or discounts for reviews, selectively soliciting only positive ones, and asking staff to hit review quotas or request specific content (Google, Prohibited and restricted content, accessed October 2026). A neutral message that follows the rules:
"Thanks for choosing us. If you would like to share your experience on Google, here is the link. Honest feedback is welcome either way."
Reply to reviews too. Google advises short, specific replies over a pasted thank-you, and no promotions in replies (Google, Tips to get more reviews, accessed October 2026).
4. Citations and NAP consistency (3 to 5 hours for the first pass)
A citation is any mention of your business name, address and phone number (NAP) on another site. Consistency means the same name, phone and address format everywhere, so write one canonical version and copy it. If you hide your address on Google as a service-area business, keep that decision consistent on every other listing.
Start with these listings that serve Canada:
- Bing Places for Business, a free listing for Bing.
- Apple's business tools, which include a Maps option.
- Yelp.ca, the Canadian Yelp site.
- Canada411.ca and YellowPages.ca (YP.ca). YP.ca also runs a French-language site, PagesJaunes.ca, worth checking if you serve Quebec.
Then add your industry's directories. Vertical ones such as Avvo, Healthgrades, Zocdoc, Realtor.ca and HomeStars have to be claimed directly. To audit, search your phone number and business name in quotes and log every mismatch in a spreadsheet. Keeping dozens of listings in sync by hand is where this job tends to stall. SPECTRA is Skyfall's listings service for that part: it manages listings across 160+ directories and does not reach the vertical directories above.
5. Service and location pages (3 to 4 hours per page)
Give each service its own page. Add a page for an area only when you can say something true about working there. Google's spam policies name doorway abuse, including pages aimed at specific cities and substantially similar pages (Google Search spam policies, accessed October 2026). A template with only the city swapped sits close to that line.
An outline you can copy, with an illustrative example (no client page):
- H1 and title tag: the service and the place, for example "Furnace repair in Ottawa."
- First paragraph: what you do and where, and how to book.
- How it works and pricing: the steps from first call to finished job, and a price range or how you price.
- Proof: your own photos and reviews from customers in that area, used with permission.
- Service area: the neighbourhoods you actually work in.
- FAQ: the questions customers ask you on the phone.
- Contact: a tap-to-call phone link, plus name, phone and address (if public) as plain text.
Pick wording from data: Google Keyword Planner and Google Trends show how people phrase a service, and Search Console shows what already earns impressions. Google documents LocalBusiness structured data for hours and details. Opinion: add it after everything above is live.
6. Technical basics (1 to 2 hours)
-
Indexing. For a small site, Google suggests searching
site:yourdomain.comand checking that your key pages appear. For one specific page, use the URL Inspection tool (Google, Page indexing report, accessed October 2026). - Mobile. Google indexes and ranks from the mobile version of your pages, so they need the same content as desktop (Google, Mobile-first indexing best practices, 2025).
- Speed. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds and Interaction to Next Paint of 200 milliseconds or less, plus Cumulative Layout Shift of 0.1 or less, at the 75th percentile of visits (web.dev, Web Vitals, 2024). Test your pages in the free PageSpeed Insights tool.
What to skip
- Keywords or city names in your Business Profile name, and any paid or gated reviews. Both can get a profile suspended.
- Bought links. Opinion: earn links from suppliers and local associations you really deal with.
- A fixed blog schedule before your service pages exist. Opinion: a post earns its place once the pages that bring in customers are live and indexed.
Local SEO and AI search
Google's documentation on AI Overviews and AI Mode says the same foundational SEO practices apply. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to be a supporting link, with no additional technical requirements. The page also lists keeping your Business Profile up to date, and says this traffic is counted in the Search Console Performance report (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, updated December 2025). For Google's surfaces, the checklist above doubles as the AI checklist. We found no equivalent published rules from other AI assistants, so treat vendor claims about them with caution.
Rough time budget
These are rough estimates for a one-location business. We have not timed them across real projects, and your site and market will change them.
| Task | First pass (rough estimate) |
|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | 1 to 2 hours, plus verification wait |
| Search Console | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Review process | 30 minutes |
| Citations and NAP | 3 to 5 hours |
| Three service pages | 9 to 12 hours |
| Technical check | 1 to 2 hours |
That adds up to about 15 to 22 hours, or five to eight weeks at three hours a week. Afterwards, plan on roughly one to two hours a month for the profile, reviews, Search Console and a quarterly listings check.
Three ways to get it done
| Route | Cost | Covers | Does not cover |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | $0 in tools, plus your hours | The full checklist, using Google Business Profile, Search Console, Keyword Planner, Trends and PageSpeed Insights | Anything you do not have time to keep up. Nobody builds your baseline for you. |
| SPECTRA local listings | Starting at $299/mo USD | Listings management across 160+ directories, syncing major search, maps and social platforms | Vertical directories (claimed directly), website pages, content |
| Full SEO (Ottawa local SEO page) | Starting at $1,399/mo USD | SEO built on authority content. Every engagement is baselined in week one and reported against rankings and local visibility. | Ads and social media are separate services, as are website builds. Larger scopes are quoted after a baseline audit. |
Skyfall prices are in USD, so compare them with Canadian market figures only when each is labelled CAD or USD.
DIY or hire: a decision rule
Opinion (a rule of thumb with no data behind it). Answer three questions:
- Can someone give about three hours a week for the first five to eight weeks, then about an hour a week?
- Search your main service plus your city on your phone and count the reviews on the top three map results. Could you collect that many genuine reviews in a year?
- Do your customers search by place? If they come mostly from outside your area or from referrals, local SEO is the wrong main channel.
If the answers to the first two are yes, do it yourself for 90 days. If you have the hours but directory upkeep keeps stalling, the listings tier fits. If you lack the hours, or the top three have several times your review count, hire for the full job. If you need customers within weeks, SEO is the wrong tool: Google says recrawling a page can take anywhere from several days to several months.
How to tell it is working
Write down your numbers today. In the Business Profile performance report, watch calls, direction requests and website clicks (Google, Understand your Business Profile performance, accessed October 2026). In Search Console, watch impressions and clicks for your service-plus-city queries. Check monthly from the same start date.
